FanWar Rationale and Philosophy
"I don't know the rules..."
This is the most common fear of new players. Fantasy Warplay
looks very confusing and complicated from the outside, but
then so does a game of chess, or a soccer match, for that
matter, if you don't already know the rules. The most common
fear of new players is that they will have a spell cast
at them and not know what to do. Don't worry about this.
Players are more often than not, happy to explain a spell
or rule to you. Furthermore, all spells and abilities in
FanWar say what they do to make it easy for beginers to
learn. For example, if I am going to cast a fireball I say,
"With Fireball I deal 1 damage" and then throw
my ball at you. Even if you don't know what a fireball does,
you can guess at what it might do from what I say when I
cast it.
Furthermore, just like in soccer or chess, FanWar has a
very simple structure at it's core and if you understand
the core rules, the rest make much more sense. When you
are learning the game, don't worry about all the spells
and skills (you probably won't even encounter them for a
long time). Focus on the "engine" that drives
the game, a system of Hit Points. In a nut shell, the engine
of FanWar is a system in which you have a certain amount
of Hit Points that represent your healthy body (lets say
you have 3 Hit Points). When I poke you with my sword you
loose a hit point (then you would be at 2 Hit Points). If
you get to zero hit points, you fall down. Simple aye!

"There are too many rules..."
There are a lot of skills and spells in FanWar, but
not a lot of rules. As I explained above, the rules are
actually very simple. What people feel is confusing or overwhelming
are all the spells and skills that other characters have
or that they are trying to use. The beauty of FanWar is
that it is only as complicated as you make it for yourself.
If you are a first time player, you don't have to worry
about how to cast tons of spells or what they do, you won't
even see most spells or skills for a long time. If you like
you can simply be a basic warrior type and focus on learning
the engine of the game. When you do encounter a spell, it
is usually explained in the casting of it, and half the
spells and skills in the game are used out of combat where
there is plenty of time to look in a book for specifics
or details.

"I don't know how to play..."
Fantasy Warplay is a Role Playing Game. That means that
you take on a character like in a play, except that there
is no script, you are writing the script as you act out
the character. Imagine if you took a character from your
favorite book or movie and put them in a new context. How
would they act? What would they do? When you play FanWar
that is what you must consider and act upon. At first it
can be ackward, trying to decide what your warrior would
say to the wizard that has just insulted him. But in time
you will get to the point where your response comes out
naturally. As in any Role Playing Game, your Character is
going to go on adventures to either explore their world,
gain treasure or magic items, save people in need or perhaps
conquer the nearby province, but ultimately you are in charge
of what your character does. As you explore the town and
talk to other characters, you are making the decisions for
your character and can be as involved as you like. Whether
you are fighting your way through heaps of goblins or planning
the best way to avoid the dragon in the woods, it is all
about acting, and getting into a story that you are creating.

"I don't know how to act..." FanWar
is a very drama based game but even those of you with
very limited theatrical skills can do very well, so don't
worry. It doesn't take too much dramatic flare to swing
a sword and silently glare at the elf who just asked you
your name. Or if you don't want to act very much, play
a character that is a lot like yourself, thus making it
easy for you to know what to say or do. While we do like
to keep the acting at a constant, if you ever need to
ask someone something that does not have a bearing on
the game, or is of a more personal nature, simple proceed
your statement with the prase "Out of Game-"
so that they know you want to talk to them about something
not as your character.

"I don't know if it is safe..."
FanWar is an incredibly safe game. Most organized sports
are far more dangerous than a live action role play like
FanWar. All the weapons are very well padded and check regualarly
for safety issues. The actual play of the game resembles
a game of tag more that real combat where you might try
to bowl someone over. In the history of FanWar, no-one has
ever been seriously injured. As I said before, we pride
ourselves on safe, friendly play. So what are you waiting
for! Read the Rule Book in PDF
